Art and mental illness

My initial point is going to sound very corny. What I want to write about right now is the revelation I had like 5 seconds ago (and probably also days, months, and years ago) that the line between art and insanity really is very finnicky. Not to me though, I mean to the general public. I thought about this 'cause I was just looking through this one fetish artists twitter page. Their art consists of a lot of extreme bondage and some mutilation and gore adjacent stuff. I have many mutuals who draw or are into this kind of stuff and as much as I am not sexually into extreme bondage, I do earnestly love extreme bondage art. I follow a lot of artists who are into latex, extreme bondage and gore (for lack of a better word) and stuff like that. Point being: it's actually very very strange to be into this, especially to 'normal people' who would probably genuinely think you're insane for having an interest in this at all. I don't mean a sexual interest either; I think it's easier for people to accept that others are disgusting depraved perverts. That's why people so often assume that anything strange is perverted. Because perverts are bad people who do strange things. Which would mean that having a non-sexual interest in art like this would make no sense. You'd have to either be insane or disgusting to like it.
