Dumb ass review

I'm currently watching this guys youtube review of the graphic novel 'I'm not Okay with this' and jesus christ man. Look I'll be honest and clarify that I've not read this book, so I could be wrong, but his critiques all come down to 'you're not making this clear enough for me' and 'I don't like this'. Ok before I continue I need to comment on this. For context, the story is being told through the main characters diary right? One thing he talks about is it being weird that the character writes to someone in her diary. She uses "you", almost like she's adressing someone. He talks about it like it's a writing mistake, like it's something amateur and bad and the writer is a retard for not realizing how weird it is.

Notice how I'm continuously writing to someone here, to you. Notice no ones actually anyone reading this? People often write like they're writing to someone. This is actually very normal and this guy is a gigantic, conceited, selfimportant, insufferable moron.

Guy starts whining about how the main character is mean to her mom, how they never acknowledge the tension before resolving the conflict, stuff like that. Dude okay consider this for a second: the story is about a teenage girl; notoriously emotional and unreasonable. It's pretty obvious that her mom understand that about her daughter, but suffers nonetheless. The fact that they don't openly talk about this 15 year old girl, whose dad kill himself, being a bitch to her mom is not a plot hole or bad writing. It just acknowledges the different ways in which characters grieve. There's a profound understanding in both the characters and narrative, that some things are left unspoken. They don't have to talk about it, because both characters, to some extend, understand eachother. ALSO the characters just have a bad relationship! Man idk how to explain this but it's like... the fact that they don't communicate openly about their problems is part of this unhealthy dynamic between mother and daughter. He basically just doesn't like Syney, that's the crux of it. I really don't think she's meant to be likeable or virtuous you fucking moron

Dude also starts talking about how it's weird for an adult male writer to write about the experiences of a teenage girl. Think of it what you will, but just because someone isn't the character they write about doesn't mean they don't understand their character or can't adequately write about them. This is such a retarded take man. Not just in isolation though, I think it's pretty obvious that the writing of this graphic novel is too subtle for this guy. I know that makes me sound like such a snob, but dude he's in the fucking video talking about the inclusion of super powers in a narrative as a way to explore a character and their emotions. And his examples of good writing are the Hulk and Turning Red. Like dude... LMAO. He really does not understand any themes beyond anything surface level and is incapable to reading between the lines or just like understanding implication. You know what he says specifically? That the inclusion of the super powers don't make sense and that they could've just subbed those mental powers or whatever she has for a gun.... *silence*. Dude ok get this: her dads like this soldier right? Used his powers to kill people and eventually hung himself because his abilities got to him and he didn't want to keep hurting people.... Guess what's up with sydney. Syndey... also has these powers that got passed down onto her by her father. Sydney also hurts people, partially because of the stress of having these powers, and ends up killing herself because of it. Dude I'm so mad right now, it's so obvious. You know what he says in the video specifically "I guess it could be used as way to explore her rage" (something like that). YOU GUESS? YOU THINK SO? YOU THINK THESE POWERS THAT HURT PEOPLE ARE USED TO EXPLORE THOSE THEMES OF RAGE IN A BOOK ABOUT A GRIEVING, EMOTIONAL TEENAGER? YOU FUCKING THINK!?

He also makes a comment about the sexual assault in the story not having any weight because the character doesn't visibly suffer from it and because no one comments on her being assaulted throughout the story. Because her mom doesn't confront her about it head on, shit like that. Well, like we just established, she ends up killing herself. Something she does after killing a guy who just assaulted and hospitalized another woman so... It's pretty obvious she's not particularly mentally sound. Just because she doesn't consciously recognize she's being sexually assaulted or raped doesn't mean she's unaffected, it just means the story trusts it's reader to realize that people deal with trauma differently... God this guy just annoyed the fuck out of me. He even had the audacity to call it disrespectful to real victims of assault. You think all victims of assault realize they're victims the second something happens to them? That people are always there to confront and or comfort them about it or that other people are even willing to acknowledge the assault in the first place? Or that every assault case is cut and dry? Are you fucking stupid? You stupid stupid moron. You don't know anything you imbecile.
